1. Founding Background & History
The Wushu General Association of Macau is the highest administrative body promoting the development of Wushu in Macau, China. It was officially established on 28 June 1988, growing out of an initiative launched in the mid-1980s by Mr. Ho Yin (father of Mr. Edmund Ho Hau Wah). As a member association of the International Wushu Federation (joined in 1990) and the Wushu Federation of Asia, the Association has always been dedicated to uniting the local Wushu community and advancing the integrated development of both traditional and competitive Wushu.
Key Leadership
The presidents of the first through fourth terms was Mr. Edmund Ho Hau Wah (the first and second Chief Executive of Macau). The current president is Mr. Fong Chi Keong, a former member of the Macau Legislative Assembly, and the Chairman of the Council is Mr. Chan Weng Kit, Vice-President of the Macau Olympic Committee. Past chairmen of the Council include well-known figures such as Chui Tong Hoi and Leong Vai Tac.
2. Organisation & Scale
According to recent figures, the Association has built a well-developed organisational system:
- Member clubs & members: 126 affiliated clubs and over 9,300 registered members, covering every Wushu school in Macau as well as youth and senior groups.
- Judging team: 20 international-level Wushu judges (certified by the International Wushu Federation) and 130 local judges, providing professional support for hosting events.
3. Core Functions & Events
Through hosting events, developing talent and promoting culture, the Association has become the core driving force of Wushu in Macau:
1. Signature Events
- Annual events: the Macau Wushu Championships, the Youth Wushu Championships, and the Taijiquan & Weapons Championships.
- Featured events: the territory-wide Dragon Dance (Nine-Section Dragon) Open and the Lion Dance (Southern Lion) Open, held every two years, plus the Macau Inter-School Wushu Competition.
- International events: host of the 10th Asian Wushu Championships (2024), the World Junior Wushu Championships, the East Asian Games Wushu competition and other top-tier international events, attracting athletes from more than 20 countries and regions.
2. Cultural Heritage & Youth Development
- Tradition meets competition: driving Wushu's transformation from a traditional self-defence art into a modern competitive sport, and introducing newly-composed routines.
- Youth outreach: in partnership with the Macau Sports Bureau, founding the "Macau Youth Wushu School" and running summer interest classes each year across 22 primary and secondary schools to cultivate reserve talent.
- Landmark event: during Macau's 1999 handover, organising 3,000 people for the large-scale "Ode to the Hou Kong" performance, whose thousand-person Taiji-fan display became a classic scene.
3. "Sports + Tourism" Integration
Since 2016 the Association has built the "Wulin Heroes Gathering" brand, combining sanda ring bouts, an international dragon-and-lion invitational, and a Wushu culture forum, drawing tens of thousands of spectators with tourism elements and supporting Macau's development as a "City of Sport".
4. International Influence & Achievements
- Competitive results: the Macau Wushu team has repeatedly excelled at international events — for example a gold medal in Wushu at the Hangzhou Asian Games (Li Yi) and runner-up finishes at the World Wushu Championships.
- International exchange: as the bridge between Macau, China and the global Wushu community, the Association regularly sends delegations to International Wushu Federation and Wushu Federation of Asia events, promoting exchange of skills and culture.
5. Mission & Vision
Guided by the purpose of "promoting Chinese Wushu culture and advancing sport for all", the Association will continue to build event IP, develop youth talent and pursue international cooperation — helping Wushu become a cultural calling card that connects Macau to the world, while advancing Wushu's inclusion as an official Olympic sport and carrying the spirit of traditional Chinese sport onto a broader international stage.
